rw 2.99 MB.A ring-reactive species is a type of metal that forms an inorganic and organic compound in a ring-shaped lattice. The most common examples of ring-reactive species are in the transition metal elements, of which copper and its alloys are most notable. The reactivity of a ring-reactive element is related to its radius of the nucleus of the molecule, since the larger the radius the smaller the electronegativity of the atoms comprising the ring and the more reactive the element. The term ring-reactive is only applied to elements that are known to be active in a concerted ring-opening process to the main group or transition metals. The goal of the study of ring-reactive species is the prediction of which ring-reactive species form stable inorganic and organic compounds. This is essential to the advancement of science because the ring-reactive species are the most common agents in organic synthesis and their importance is growing. The importance of ring-reactive species as elements is demonstrated by the fact that no elements are non-reactive with rings and that the diversity of ring-reactive elements is greater than that of any other class of elements. The ring-reactive elements have great importance in the development of industries that employ transition metals, including the manufacture of alloys, semiconductors, and catalysts. A wide variety of ring-reactive elements can be grouped into three groups: those with 3d, 4d, and 5d orbitals and those with 5s, 5p, 6s, and 6p orbitals. The atomic radius and bond energies of these ring-reactive elements are discussed in detail.
